A TOUCH OF SASS
If you poke around this site, and the various sites and blogs I refer to here, you will glean far more about me than you will ever need to know. You can also learn more about my writing, speaking, and video projects. If you are truly a glutton for punishment and feel compelled to read the "long version" of my background, you are welcome to read on below. You have been forewarned!
Who The BLEEP is Jeffrey Sass???
I have more than 40 years of experience in the technology and entertainment industries, with a major focus in the last 30 years in the Internet and mobile space. That said, my greatest accomplishments are my three children, now ages 35, 33 and 32 and my 9-year old grandson.
After graduating from Cornell University, I started my business career in New York at Satori Entertainment, a film and TV distributor and producer initially focused on providing content to the then nascent cable, payTV and Home Video businesses. We were one of the 18 founding members of the American Film Marketing Association (AFMA) and at one time the leading U.S distributor of films from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. At an early age I was very fortunate to travel extensively and work with some talented filmmakers who have gone on to become leaders in the industry including Mel Gibson, Bruce Beresford, Roger Donaldson, and many more.
My creative juices flowing, after leaving Satori I formed an independent production company called Illustrious Entertainment and co-wrote and produced a live action/clay animated TV special "My Friend Liberty" along with Academy Award winning animator Jimmy Picker and starring a young Josh Saviano ("The Wonder Years.") "My Friend Liberty" was syndicated nationally and aired on CBS. During this "Illustrious" period, I also wrote three screenplays, one of which was eventually sold to Columbia/Tri-Star pictures.
From the Illustrious to the Sublime
I eventually joined the Troma Entertainment team, having met Troma Founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz when I was at Satori. I had a long and enjoyable stay in Tromaville, deeply involved in writing and producing as well as video and television sales. When we launched THE TOXIC CRUSADERS Saturday morning cartoon series, in addition to contributing creatively to the show, I launched and ran Troma's in-house licensing and merchandising arm, making deals with more than 70 licensees worldwide, including Playmates Toys, Marvel Comics, Wormser Pajamas, and many, many more. Once enmeshed in the world of Licensing and Merchandising I was able to also handle licensing and merchandising for the Emmy Award winning PBS show, READING RAINBOW.
The Game's The Thing
While representing READING RAINBOW I made a deal with GameTek, at the time a leading video game company branching out into CD-ROM's and computer games. I ended up moving to Florida in 1994 to become GameTek's marketing director, and continued my stint in the game industry as VP Marketing at Miami based IntraCorp Entertainment, best known for the Capstone (Home Alone, William Shatner's TekWar, Witchhaven), Three-Sixty (Tom Clancy's Harpoon), and Next Move (Trump Castle) line of games.
Going Mobile
I have been active in the Mobile industry since 1998 when I co-founded and eventually became CEO of publicly traded mobile commerce pioneer BarPoint.com. As early as 2000 BarPoint had a UPC/Barcode based mobile shopping and information service "on deck" with AT&T, Sprint, Nextel, Cingular and Verizon and later supported dedicated mobile storefronts for THE SHARPER IMAGE and OFFICE DEPOT. From 2007 through February 2012 I was VP Marketing & Business Development and Chief Evangelist for Myxer, a mobile technology company that operated one of the top 15 mobile websites in the U.S. with more than 50 million users. It has been truly exciting to watch the dramatic impact mobile devices have had on our lives as the networks and handsets are finally living up to their promise, and the Internet has become our constant companion.
Filling A Void
After leaving Myxer full-time I continued on as a consultant, and also took on additional clients including working with Jason Korman and cartoonist Hugh MacLeod's GAPINGVOID. Working with GAPINGVOID I produced the podcast GAPE INTO THE VOID (featuring guests including Gary Vaynerchuk and Tim Ferriss) and co-founded SOCIAL OBJECT FACTORY to launch a content and animation studio within GAPINGVOID. We produced animations for clients including Rackspace, TechCrunch and many others.
The Name's The Thing...
During this period (early 2012) I was introduced to serial Entrepreneur Colin Campbell (Tucows, Hostopia), who had just filed an application with ICANN to obtain the rights to the new top-level domain extension, .CLUB. I began consulting for Colin shortly thereafter. During this time Colin and I also co-founded Entrepreneur.wiki, a passion driven non-profit project to support established and aspiring entrepreneurs.
We finally won the rights to .CLUB in auction in June 2013 and soon I became CMO on a full-time basis and have since helped to grow .CLUB into a global brand and one of the top and most used new domain extensions. In 2021 we sold .CLUB to GoDaddy Registry.
Pet Project
In addition to my then role at .CLUB, in 2019 I also became CMO of Paw.com, the designer and manufacturer of high quality products that are great for your pet, and also look great in your home. Paw.com (fka Treatadog.com) is part of the Startups.club incubator operated out of the .CLUB HQ in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In addition to .CLUB and Paw.com I am currently "CMO to go" for several other businesses.
"Everyone is an Artist!"
In 2023 I could not resist the opportunity to get back into the domain game and joined .ART as CMO. As the leading domain for creatives, .ART is building upon its foundation as the domain registry to become the global registry for all art and cultural objects. As a creative person and a writer myself, it has been extremely rewarding to dive deep into the world of art and culture.
I speak frequently at Domain Industry and Marketing Events and have served on the Mobile Marketing Association’s (MMA) Education and Advocacy Committee. I have been a founding Member of Mobile Monday Miami (MoMo Miami) and a founding board member of the Mobile Internet Content Coalition (MICC). I have also served as an online instructor for the University of San Francisco's Mobile Marketing Program. As an early "Dad Blogger" I have been an Intel Advisor and Sony DigiDad. I was a board member of The Domain Name Association (TheDNA.org) and Chaired the non-profit's Marketing Committee. I recently served on the board of South Florida Tech Hub (TechHubSouthFlorida.org), focused on enhancing and growing the South Florida technology and startup community.
I look forward to the future!
